Protesters in Bangladesh demolished a national monument related to the 1971 war. This monument located in Mujibnagar was a symbol of the victory of the Bharat-Muktivahini Army and the defeat of the Pakistani Army.
On 16 December 1971, Pakistan’s Lieutenant General AAK Niazi surrendered to the Indian Army along with thousands of soldiers.
He signed the documents in front of Lieutenant-General Jagjit Singh Arora, Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army. His image is depicted in this monument.
At the same time, the interim government of Bangladesh has asked Sheikh Hasina to return. Brigadier General M Sakhawat, who is holding the charge of Home Ministry in the government formed after Hasina’s resignation, has said that Hasina’s party needs new faces.
He said that Hasina was not expelled from the country, she herself had fled. Sakhawat has said that she can return, just not to spoil the situation in the country again. Sakhawat also said that Hasina’s stay in Delhi will not affect India-Bangladesh relations.
Yunus Mohammad is not a threat to India
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said in an interview that Mohammad Yunus is not a threat to India. He said that Yunus has no links with Pakistan’s ISI or Jamaat-e-Islami. They are close to America. In such a situation, his forming an interim government will not have much impact on India-Bangladesh relations.
At the same time, amidst the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, Chief Advisor of the interim government Mohammad Yunus will meet Hindu students. Hindu student minority rights movement group will put forward 8 demands before the Yunus government. According to Dhaka Tribune, 205 incidents related to attacks on Hindu community have been registered after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
Resignation of 70 government lawyers in Dhaka
On the other hand, 70 government lawyers of the Attorney General Office in Bangladesh resigned on Monday. According to the Dhaka Tribune, there were 215 government lawyers working in the Attorney General’s office. Earlier the protesters had taken resignation from the Chief Justice.
Mohammad Yunus acquitted in corruption case, relief in two cases in four days
Interim government chief Mohammad Yunus was acquitted on Sunday in a corruption case. Anti-Corruption Commission of Bangladesh had registered a case against Yunus regarding corruption.
An interim government has been formed in Bangladesh only 3 days ago. Even a day before the formation of the interim government, Yunus was acquitted in a case related to violation of labor laws. Noorjahan Begum, who was an advisor to the government, has also been acquitted in the corruption case. According to Bangladeshi newspaper Daily Star, the Anti Corruption Commission has withdrawn its complaint filed in Dhaka Court.
