The Supreme Court is hearing a case related to the murder and alleged rape of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Center has recently filed an application in the Supreme Court accusing the West Bengal government of “inexcusable” non-cooperation. In its application, the Union Home Ministry has described the alleged non-cooperation of the TMC government as a “symptom of systemic malaise” and has sought direction to the state authorities to extend full cooperation to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
While hearing the case on August 22, the Supreme Court pulled up the Kolkata Police for the delay in registering a case of unnatural death of the doctor. Making an emotional appeal to the doctors protesting across the country, the Supreme Court asked them to return to work and said that “justice and medicine” cannot be stopped. Two days earlier, on August 20, the court had termed the rape and murder incident as “horrific”.
And had issued several directions, including formation of a 10-member national task force to prepare a protocol to ensure the safety of doctors and other healthcare professionals. He began by mentioning that the stomach contents also revealed something, but left it incomplete. Mr Mahesh Jethmalani then completed the statement, stating that the stomach contents showed that the victim had eaten food. The Chief Justice said that there was a delay of at least 14 hours in filing the FIR.
