Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday took a dig at the Trinamool Congress student wing Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) celebrating its foundation day and asked whether the ruling party of the state understands the importance of such organisations or not.

The official said the naming of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad was inspired from the Congress student wing ‘Chhatra Parishad’ and termed it a copycat. He said the Chhatra Parishad was founded by two great Congress leaders of the state, late Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi and late Subrata Mukherjee, who were considered as the ‘two eyes’ of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.

On Wednesday morning, Suvendu Adhikari wrote on his official X handle, “Today is not the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, but copy day! As is your natural habit, you have ‘stolen’ today like other things to take credit of the real founders like Priya Da and Subhrata Da.”

In his message, the officer also accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party of deliberately stopping the process of student union elections in many institutions of the state. According to him, this is a well-planned ploy so that students cannot raise their voice against the corruption happening in the state.

He said, “You understand very well that students and youth play a big role not only in social role but also in the building of the state. Therefore, you have deliberately stopped the election of student council for the last nine years so that the new generation of student leaders cannot come out on the streets to raise their voice against your corrupt government.”

The officer also questioned the chief minister’s concern for the future of students. He wrote, “How concerned you are about the bright future of students can be understood from the incidents of corruption in the education department during your regime, selling of jobs, wrong question papers, leaking of question papers before the examination, looting of crores of rupees by ministers like Partha Chatterjee and forcing legitimate job seekers to sit on the road for years.”

Earlier, chief minister Mamata Banerjee, in a post on Instagram, dedicated the TMCP foundation day to the memory of a woman doctor of Kolkata’s state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was brutally raped and murdered earlier this month.

In her post, the Chief Minister said, “Today I dedicate the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad to the memory of our sister who we tragically lost a few days ago at R.G. Kar Hospital. And please, our heartfelt condolences to the family of the sister who was brutally tortured and killed and demand for speedy justice, as well as to women of all ages across India who have been victims of such inhumane acts. Please forgive.”
