The Supreme Court has granted bail to Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) leader K. Kavitha, accused in the Delhi Excise Scam case, in the ED and CBI cases. A bench headed by Justice BR Gavai ordered her release on bail.
During the hearing, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for K. Kavita, had said that the petitioner has been in custody for the last five months. He said that chargesheets have been filed in both ED and CBI cases. There are 493 witnesses in the case. Rohatgi had sought bail for K. Kavita on the basis of bail granted to Manish Sisodia, Prabir Purkayastha and Kejriwal. He had said that K. Kavita is a woman. When the court issued notice to ED and CBI, Rohatgi sought interim bail. Then the court said that no order can be given without hearing the side of ED and CBI.
It is noteworthy that on 22 July, the Rouse Avenue Court took cognizance of the chargesheet filed by the CBI against K. Kavitha. Kavitha was arrested by the CBI on 11 April. The CBI filed a chargesheet against K. Kavitha on 7 June. The court took cognizance on 29 May on the chargesheet filed by the ED against K. Kavitha.
ED arrested Kavita on March 15 after conducting raids in Hyderabad. According to ED, 33 percent of the profit through Indospirits went to Kavita. According to ED, Kavita was associated with the liquor traders’ lobby South Group. ED had sent two summons to Kavita for questioning but she ignored it and did not appear, after which she was arrested after conducting raids.
