In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage, a man has been arrested for filming and sharing a video of a woman being raped on a busy footpath in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The accused, identified as Mohammad Salim, an auto-rickshaw driver, was apprehended by the police within hours of the incident coming to light.
The horrifying event took place on September 5th at Koyla Phatak, one of Ujjain’s busiest intersections. According to the police, the victim, a ragpicker, was lured by another man, Lokesh, who promised to marry her. Lokesh allegedly made her consume alcohol before assaulting her in broad daylight. Shockingly, several passersby witnessed the crime but chose to film it instead of intervening.
The video, which quickly went viral on social media, prompted swift action from the authorities. Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma stated that district police, cyber, and social media teams were deployed to identify the person who filmed the incident. Salim, who has a prior criminal record, was identified and arrested. His mobile phone is currently being examined for further evidence.
The incident has ignited a political firestorm, with opposition parties criticizing the ruling government for failing to ensure women’s safety. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has promised strict action against the perpetrators and accused the opposition of politicizing the crime. “No one will be spared. We are committed to good governance and ensuring the safety of our citizens,” Yadav stated.
This case has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger measures to protect women and ensure swift justice for victims of sexual violence. The public outcry over the incident underscores the growing frustration with the perceived inadequacies in the current system. As the investigation continues, there is a collective call for more stringent laws and better enforcement to prevent such heinous acts in the future.
The arrest of Mohammad Salim is a step towards justice, but it also serves as a grim reminder of the societal apathy that allows such crimes to occur. It is a wake-up call for all to act decisively against gender-based violence and support the victims in their quest for justice.
