Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called a cabinet meeting for the first time after the recent incident at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. This meeting will be held on August 28 at 4:30 pm at Navanna. State Chief Secretary BP Gopalika gave information about this meeting on Thursday night. This will be the 59th cabinet meeting, in which the Chief Minister herself will preside. All ministers and state ministers have been instructed to be present in this meeting.

It is noteworthy that earlier on August 5, on the last day of the session of the Assembly, Mamata Banerjee had held a cabinet meeting. But after the incident of rape and murder of a female doctor in R.G. Kar Medical College on August 9, there has been a lot of upheaval in the politics of the state. There is a lot of pressure on the state administration regarding this incident. The investigation of the case has been taken away from the Kolkata Police and handed over to the CBI, which was done on the instructions of the Calcutta High Court. The Supreme Court has also taken suo motu cognizance of this case and on Thursday the CBI submitted its ‘status report’ in the Supreme Court. The court has also raised sharp questions on the state government.

The same day, 28 August, is also the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, in which Mamata Banerjee will be the keynote speaker at the event to be held on Mayo Road. On this occasion, Mamata Banerjee can hit back at the opposition over the RG Kar scandal. Trinamool National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee can also be present at this event. Mamata Banerjee usually does not hold state administrative programs on the day of Trinamool’s big events, but this time the cabinet meeting has been held on the same day, due to which speculations are being made whether any cabinet reshuffle or administrative changes will be made in the meeting.

Apart from the Chief Secretary, the Additional Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Finance Department, Department of Hill Affairs, Land and Land Reforms Department, and officials of Refugee Relief Rehabilitation Department have also been directed to be present in this meeting.
