Landslide Victim in Kerala Pleads for Government Support and Insurance Relief After Devastating Losses

Kozhikode, August 12, 2024 – The aftermath of a catastrophic landslide in Vilangad, Kozhikode, has left residents grappling with profound loss and uncertainty, as they plead for government intervention and support. Among the affected is a local resident who has voiced concerns about the challenges faced by the community, particularly in dealing with insurance claims and the emotional toll on families.

The landslide, which struck suddenly, caused extensive damage to properties and vehicles, leaving the victims in a state of despair. “We lost many vehicles from this side. Students were using laptops and mobile phones. They had insurance coverage,” the victim explained, highlighting the widespread impact of the disaster. However, the process of filing insurance claims has proven to be a significant hurdle for many.

“Whenever insurance authorities visit the places, they ask for proof,” the victim continued, describing the frustrating experience of dealing with insurance companies. The loss of six vehicles, including three that remain unaccounted for, has added to the burden. “We don’t know where three vehicles are; we are unable to find one car and two bikes. So, they are asking for an affidavit and telling us that we need to find the vehicles.”

The resident’s account underscores the broader challenges faced by the community in the wake of the disaster. With so many assets lost or damaged, the process of proving ownership and loss has become an overwhelming task for many, especially when the required documentation is buried under the rubble or lost entirely.

In addition to the material losses, the emotional and psychological toll on the victims has been immense. The resident revealed that both of their sons are currently admitted to Baby Memorial Hospital in Kannur, struggling with shock and depression following the traumatic event. “They got shocked and depressed; the elder one is not able to sleep properly,” the resident said, reflecting the deep emotional scars left by the disaster.

In light of these challenges, the victim has called on the government to take decisive action to support those affected. “The government should take a decision over here and support students and other people here,” they urged, emphasizing the need for special considerations in insurance policies and a comprehensive relief package. “The government should announce a package or special rules and regulations for considering this insurance policy.”

As the community of Vilangad struggles to rebuild, the call for government support grows louder. Residents are seeking not only financial aid but also psychological support to help them cope with the losses and trauma they have endured. The plea for a government response reflects the desperate need for intervention to ensure that those who have lost everything can find a path to recovery.
