A civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police was arrested on Saturday for allegedly driving his motorcycle into a barricaded area and injuring one of the students of Rabindra Bharati University, who were protesting there against the rape and murder of a doctor, a senior official said.

He said the incident occurred at around 2 am when a civic volunteer of the Sithi police station entered the barricaded area where a night vigil was going on demanding justice for the deceased doctor and attacked one of the protesting students.

One of the protesting students said that the accused was in an inebriated state when the incident took place on BT Road at Synthi Crossing near the university in the northern part of the city. The agitating students blocked the main road for about five hours. They alleged that a traffic constable helped the civic volunteer escape from the spot. They demanded that punitive action be taken against the culprit.
